Movie Posters

Cover Art Decisions:
Primarily created because wix (my current portfolio website of choice) compresses the first image of collection posts in a way I don't like. The cover art for this section of graphics is inspired by the constructivism art style. An early rough draft into the art form, I am teaching myself to use only the red, white and black colors as well as asymmetrical and abstract lines. I have some experience with other tri-color variations but not of this newspaper-style simplicity. The star represents the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a well sought after entertainment milestone for primarily actors/actresses. I chose red for the word "movie" and not "poster", because it is the most important element out of the entire graphic. I chose to tilt the film slate to adhere to the rules of the constructivist art form and the tile the writing lines on the write side of the slate. The winding path at the bottom represents the red carpet, but I made the middle blank because I didn't want to pull so much focus from the words at the top of the graphic.

"The Half of It" Decisions:
The movie "The Half of It" is a coming of age queer film about three high school teenagers in a love triangle with a ghostwriter twist. Green is often seen as a somewhat gender neutral color (unlike pink, yellow, & purple marketed towards women and red, orange & blue marketed towards men). Many queer people have a connection to the color green due to this ambiguity and as such I felt it as the best color to use for a somewhat monochrome poster.
The feather pen and the three color text bubbles represent the modes of communication primarily used during the course of the film. The pen specifically separates the half as both a play on the literal definition but also representing that there are two writers in this story, a dual sided pen. The white and orange text bubble are mimicking the colors worn by the two cover characters. The white bubble going first to signify the male identifying character's initial attraction to the third character of the love triangle and the orange bubble signifying the delayed feelings as well as the ghost writing of the female identifying character.
"She loves me, she loves me not" is a common phrase used when referring to uncertain requited love attraction. The hearts on the side and the "she loves me..not" represent the heartbreak that occurs during the film for one of the love triangle characters, and the broken hearts for the friendships involved all around. "She loves me..not" also has "not" over the head of the person who ends up alone at the end of the film but has portions of the entire phrase, over both of the individuals fighting to win the love triangle.
The image that I chose for this graphic has both writers of the triangle with distinct clothing colors and a shot of the ghost writer hold the phone as they deliberate what to type. I feel that it is the best representation of the plot of the film without fully giving away the ending. The different symbolic elements around them also show pieces of the plotline, but until individuals watch the film does all of the information seen in the graphic come become clearer.
